Delta Upsilon -Giving Back to the Athen's Community

The Brothers of the Ohio Chapter of Delta Upsilon feel the need to give back to the Athens community. As a fraternity we are proud of the work we do for others in the area. Along with our fellow alumni Mayor Richard Able, Delta Upsilon came up with a plan to sponsor Elliott Street. With this sponsorship, the brothers do a quarterly cleaning project for the street. This not only keeps the area clean, but also lets us keep in touch with our neighbors.
This year Delta Upsilon also started what will become our annual pop-tab collection. This is a contest for all of the Ohio University greek community members to collect pop-tabs that are then converted to money and donated to fight cancer. Along side this; monetary donations can also be contributed for the contest. Cancer is a topic that is far reaching and has effects felt by just about everyone. With this project, Delta Upsilon tries to do what they can to help donate funds for research on cancer.
Another project Delta Upsilon enjoys participating in and actually played a role in developing is the Second Helping Food Program. Along with Senator At-Large Stephanie Pleli, Delta Upsilon helps to prepare food for transfer to the local food shelters in the Athen's community. The concept of the project is to take the perfectly good (non-used, non-served) food that would normally be thrown away at the university dining halls and take it to those who need a good meal. The program has been a huge success and expanded from one dining hall to now coordinating with five dining halls every week.
Delta Upsilon's future plans for community service is to coordinate a university-wide blood drive for Red Cross, to repeat the pop-tab collection project, and DU has already given their word to prepare food for the Second Helping Food Program once everyweek for the year 2005! If you have a project that needs help from a local Athens neighbor, please feel free to contact Delta Upsilon.
